thoughtful design, intentional impact

Mynzo

project duration : Mar - may 2024

app design . prototyping . behavioural strategy . user flow mapping

mynzo is a climate-consciousness application designed to help users understand the environmental impact of their daily lives. the app automatically tracks activities — primarily through location data — and estimates the user’s daily carbon emissions. it then builds a personalised climate identity and generates a future impact pathway (FIP) to guide individuals toward reducing their overall footprint.

Project Brief

designing a pathway to change

the project required developing a user-centred engagement framework that makes sustainability more approachable, intuitive, and actionable. the goal was to introduce elements of storytelling, simulation, and gamification to encourage long-term behavioural change and support users on their journey toward a net-zero lifestyle.

reimagining our daily choices through purposeful environmental design

identified drawbacks

in the existing app (during the time of the project)

while mynzo captures emissions accurately, the current experience lacks meaningful engagement. users receive data but not direction. the app does not provide behavioural prompts, motivation loops, or interactive outcomes, resulting in limited habit formation and minimal influence on actual user behaviour.

research foundation

the research phase explored multiple dimensions — behavioural-change frameworks, user psychology, motivation models,  the stages of behavioural change and more. this understanding helped build a clear foundation for how habits are formed, sustained, and transformed, ultimately guiding the direction toward an effective design solution.

exploring behaviour and change

understanding behaviour

Behaviour

the way in which an animal or person behaves in response to a particular situation or stimulus

Behaviour Change

Design for behaviour change is an openly value-based approach that seeks to promote ethical behaviours and attitudes within social and environmental contexts. This raises questions about whose values are promoted and to whose benefit.

Behaviour Designers

combine Psychology, Design, Technology, and Creative Methods to find out why people do the things they do and to figure out through experimentation how to activate them to change their behaviour.

Reminder

A reminder is that never-ending alarm that tells you what to do. It could be your phone or clock, but it could also be the voice of someone who cares deeply about you, and they just physically remind you to do something, or nag at you in a loving way.

Routine

A routine is what happens if we follow through with the reminder. We end up repeating that behavior, forming a routine. This step is critical because repetition is key to habit formation.

Reward

A reward could be the icing on the cake. If we are talking about changing a food-related behavior, for example, the reward could be the treat we have at the end of the week reminding us we did well. It also could be a less tangible satisfaction such as improved self esteem, quality of life, or improved mood.

the 5 stages of behavioural change

1. pre-contemplation
the user is not yet aware of the need to change. sustainability feels distant or irrelevant, and daily habits continue unconsciously.

2. contemplation
the user begins to recognise the impact of their actions. they are thinking about change but haven’t yet committed to it.

3. preparation
the user is ready to act. they look for small, manageable steps or guidance that can help them begin the transition.

4. action
the user actively makes changes — adopting new routines, exploring alternatives, and responding to prompts and rewards.

5. maintenance
the user works to sustain the new behaviour long-term. consistency, positive reinforcement, and meaningful feedback keep the habit alive.

behavioural change is a process that requires series of methods and strategies that can not be achieved in a day or by a single change or method.

It requires attention, engagement, interest, self involvement and majorly trust.

Behavioural change strategies

Nudges

Nudges are subtle cues or prompts that encourage users to take a desired action

Social Proof

leverages the influence of social norms to encourage users to conform to certain behaviors.

Gamification

incorporating game-like elements, such as rewards or points, into the user experience to motivate users to engage with the product.

Feedback Loops

provide users with information on their progress or performance, which can encourage continued engagement and motivate behavior change.

designing the path to long-term change

final design direction

the redesigned mynzo experience focuses on guiding users toward the maintenance stage of behavioural change — the point where sustainable habits become consistent and self-driven. the solution integrates behavioural science with a more engaging, intuitive interface.

1. behavioural prompts and nudges
mynzo introduces a set of behaviour-driven interactions, including:
• gamification to motivate progress
• feedback loops to show improvement
• social proof to build community reassurance
• subtle nudges to encourage small, consistent actions

these elements help users move from awareness to intentional daily behaviour.

the existing app (during the time of the project)

here the app starts with telling people whats wrong

the interface design is not very harmonious with too much elements

while here it starts with a question of self involvement

the interface design is made harmonious and only focuses at one prompt per page

34_edited.png

when people willingly want to take part they tend to stay longer in the process.

2. guiding users through the stages of awareness
the journey is structured around four internal shifts that support long-term change:
• awareness — understanding personal impact
• realisation — recognising patterns and consequences
• impact — seeing the results of improved behaviour
• relatedness — feeling connected to a larger purpose
• transcendence — moving beyond tasks to a sense of contribution

design that keeps users moving forward

a series of questions designed to identify the user’s stage of change, allowing the app to deliver the most relevant and personalised behavioural prompts.

introducing

  • daily progress

  • daily tasks notifications

  • climate classes notifications

  • seperate sections for MQI and Emissions

the original landing page has less information and lacks user engagement

the interface feels calm and eco

Promoting user engagement

sustainability built through behaviour.

Separate sections for MQI and Carbon Emissions for better understandin

introducing MQI trends

impact of C02 emissions shown through drying branches

My progress shows daily progress compared to the previous day

for a positive progress the user gets 3 points

for a negative progress the users are suggested classes to help them achieve positive change

the page also shows emission trends showing average top four contributors

different leaderboards for different social groups of the user

color coordinated urging users to take action and engage

user gets 20 points everytime they lead

nudges to join live events and workshops

users can join community or build a community so as to promote relatededness and transcendence and to multiply the impact

introducing climate classes , daily tasks and refer and earn in Reduce Section. this will create transparency and loyalty.

the classes can be recorded and made available for users to watch by mynzo team.

for every class watched users get 5 points

users get points on completing a daily task

introducing mynzo club where users can redeem their earned points in terms of their interest

users can redeem points in FIP (forest investment plans) (1 RS for 20 points)they can also redeem them to make a purchase from mynzo affiliated sustainable brands.

User testing and feedback

I liked the interface it’s engaging and grabs attention. I would use the application. I believe it triggers behavioural change.

S.C.

For me it is engaging and promotes behavioural change.

R.G.

  • Visually very appealing, if I see someone using it I would like to install and use even if i am very new to climate change.

  • I liked the daily task feature , reward systems and community feature , it helps me realise it is achievable and create trust.

K.N.S

I liked the interface it’s engaging and grabs attention. I really like daily tasks as they give clarity of net zero being achievable . It promotes me to take action. Also the information on the landing page gives me a better understanding of the impact.
