Circular Care:
Refill, Renew, Return

project duration : Aug 2025-Dec 2025

We live in a world where the personal care industry is rapidly growing but at what cost? To the planet. To our surroundings. To our limited resources.

Circular Care is a research-driven project that examines the personal care industry beyond the surface, looking closely at how products are made, used, and eventually discarded. From manufacturing processes to end-of-life outcomes, the project maps the entire lifecycle to uncover inefficiencies, waste, and overlooked gaps within the system.

Rather than proposing idealistic or unattainable solutions, Circular Care positions itself within these gaps. Designing a system that aligns intent with action. By rethinking materials, processes, and user behaviour through a circular lens, the project aims to make sustainable choices practical, accessible, and integrated into everyday care routines.

Circular Care is not about perfection. It’s about progress, creating a loop where care for the self also means care for the planet.

How can the planet, consumer, and industry work together in the same loop?

At it's Core

  • Understanding the existing system

Began by studying the current personal care industry—how products are designed, manufactured, distributed, and disposed of.

  • Exploring refill & reuse models

Analyzed existing refill, return, and renewal options to understand what works, what fails, and where friction discourages participation.

  • Decoding recycling realities

Looked beyond assumptions to understand how recycling actually takes place—what materials are accepted, rejected, or lost within the system.

  • Material & system reality check

Identified real-world limitations of circularity, acknowledging that closed-loop systems are not always achievable.

  • Choosing better materials where loops fail

Researched alternative materials that reduce environmental impact when circular loops cannot be closed.

  • Reducing resource extraction

Focused on systems and material choices that lower dependence on virgin resources and promote responsible resource use.

  • Understanding consumer decision-making

Studied how and why consumers choose personal care products—considering factors like convenience, cost, habit, trust, and perceived sustainability.

  • Post-use behaviour analysis

Observed what happens after a product’s life ends—how users dispose of, store, reuse, or ignore packaging and refill systems.

  • Willingness to change

Examined consumer openness to sustainable alternatives, identifying gaps in awareness, accessibility, and motivation.

  • Knowledge around sustainability & recyclability

Identified misunderstandings and information gaps around materials, recycling symbols, and sustainable claims.

  • Designing for behavioural shifts

Used these insights to design a system that supports better choices without placing the burden entirely on the user.

  • Designing for adaptability

Developed a system flexible enough to scale across different personal care brands and industry sizes.

Care beyond the self

At its core, Circular Care reframes personal care as planetary care where everyday actions contribute to a more responsible ecosystem.

design that CARES

PLA + PHA : A dual material strategy for circular care

Designing for circularity is not about choosing one “perfect” material. It

is about assigning the right material to the right role in the system. After

evaluating technical performance, consumer behaviour, cost, and end-of-life

realities, a single-material solution could not meet all requirements.

A hybrid material strategy emerged as the most circular, feasible, and

behaviourally supported path.

Introducing The App

To make circular care work, the system needs more than better materials and smarter packaging—it needs a way to connect the user, the product, and the cycle. That's where the app comes in.

This app acts as the digital layer that binds the entire ecosystem together: it tracks bottle life, logs refills, records environmental savings, and enables smooth returns at the end of use. By making the invisible loop visible, it builds trust, eases behaviour change, and helps users stay engaged without adding friction.

Why Choose
Circular Care

India is moving toward a regulated future

Since 2017, sustainability and waste accountability have been gaining momentum across industries

Act early, stay ahead

Investing in circular systems now prepares brands for future regulations and reduces long-term risk.

Consumers are more aware than ever

Buyers are actively seeking products that align with sustainability and transparency.

Sustainability drives purchase decisions

Responsible practices influence trust, loyalty, and brand choice.

Real impact builds real trustMeasurable action matters more than surface-level green claims.

Smarter systems, long-term value

Circular models reduce waste, optimize resources, and improve efficiency over time.

Differentiate in a crowded market

Circular care helps brands stand out where products often look and feel the same.
